Kodachromes without Dust and Scratches
<<... without dust and scratches? Kodachromes are K14 slides and as we know ICE only works, if at all, with the Nikon LS 9000 to some extent. >> this is the general experience in the market. So far there was no working solution with 35 mm film scanner regarding Kodachrome and infrared-based dust and scratch removal.

Luckily a solution has been developed for Apple Macintosh users with SilverFast 6.6 applying a new kind of SilverFast iSRD. SilverFast iSRD, similar to ICE-TEchnologies, is based on using the infrared channel information. Contrary to ICE, iSRD works totally different and can be custom controlled by the user regarding strength and image area.

A preview mode allows to combine the effects of iSRD and SRD. SRD is the software based dust and scratch removal, which does not use the infrared channel but has up to 4 layers, so different kind of dust and scratches can be worked on selectively with individual masks.




KODACHROMES without bluish cast.
Anyone working with Kodachrome scans without proper IT8-Calibration knows the problem of the nasty bluish cast. Even the original Nikon scan software represents a compromise since IT8-Calibration is totally lacking. Only SilverFast introduced IT8-Kodachrome calibration effectively eliminating the bluish cast problem.
Unfortunately Kodak has stopped producing Kodachrome Q60 IT8-Targets in 1999. There is only minimal stock of these IT8-Targets in the market (B&H).
For SilverFast 6.6. we have implemented a generic Kodachome ICC- profile calibration, i.e. an appropriate ICC-Profile for Kodachrome comes with SilverFast 6.6. This way any customer using SilverFast 6.6 is in a very good position not to require any Kodachrome Q60 Target any more.




Kodachromes with max. Dynamic Range
Kodachromes have represented a considerable challenge since their Dynamic Range reaches up to 3.8D - which is a grayscale range of 6300 shades and equals a contrast range of 1:6300!
Fortunately SilverFast Multi-Exposure can handle the enormous Dynamic Range with Nikon film scanners, supplying a value of 4.2D with the Nikon LS5000. This can assure the successful reproduction of deepest shades inside Kodachromes.
