Infrared Scratch and dust removal causes artifacts in black&white negatives

SymptomSymptom:
Activating the infrared based scratch and dust removal (iSRD / ICE) for black&white negatives causes artefacts.

These can take the form of geometric figures.
Geometrische Artefakte

Or fuzzy contrast edges.
Unscharfe Übergänge

ProblemProblem:
The silver halide emulsion of black&white negatives blocks the infrared beam. SilverFast therefor can not use it for correcting defects.

You can verify this in SilverFast.
Activate the 1:1 preview 1:1 Vorschau Knopf in the iSRD dialog. Then hold the following keys pressed while you click into the preview window with the mouse.
Windows: <shift> and <Ctrl>
Mac: <shift> and <command>
The infrared channel will be shown as a black&white image.

For black&white negatives you can see that this looks almost identical to the B&W negative.
S&W Infrarotkanal
The defects can not be distinguished from the image data.

In this RGB negative's infrared channel sample, the motive is barely visible and the defects can easily be made out as black marks.

SolutionSolution:
For black&white negative scanning the iSRD unfortunately has to be deactivated. Without it the image will be scanned without artifacts.
Unbearbeitetes Schwarz&Weiß Bild

You can switch to the software based SRDx scratch and dust removal as an alternative. SRDx should be individually set up for each image.

Note:
Black&white negatives which have been processed using the C-41 (color film) method can be processed using iSRD.These films do not contain the infrared blocking properties of silver halide film. These however are not very common.

My problem is now solved. My problem is still not solved.
