Q:

Umax Astra 4500/4700/6700 detection and starting problems on OSX

A:

These problems are being caused by the most-so-good support of the Umax Astra 4500/4700/6700 series by the Mac OS X or vice versa the implementation of the OS interfaces by the drivers.

Sometimes it seems helpful to access the scanner via the USB interface of the keyboard (which actually is a USB 1.1 hub).

Another suggestion is to install an additional internal PCI USB controller card.

Because the trouble already is caused on the communications levels of drivers and OS interface, SilverFast as an application level software cannot do anything about it. Quite contrary, SilverFast needs to rely on established data communication with the hardware.

It is unlikely that as there will be any driver updates for the Astra range for OSX 10.4 (Tiger). Thus also SilverFast unfortunately cannot access these scanners under OSX Tiger.

On the hand we like to give the hint that by staying with an older version of Quicktime (not higher than 7.01), LSI staff could successfully run these scanners under Panther and even Tiger.
You might want to read a further piece of information on the webpages of Microtek USA.

Q:

SilverFast doesn't run on OS X 10.2.3 with my Nikon Filmscanner LS-40, LS-4000, LS-8000.
NikonScan works fine, what can I do?

A:

As a rule of thumb: if you install both programms (NikonScan 3.1.4 and SilverFast ver. 6) on your OSX 10.2.3, make sure that SilverFast is installed last!

SilverFast only = o.k.
NikonScan 3.1.4 only = o.k.
NikonScan then SilverFast = o.k.

SilverFast then NikonScan = problems!!

Q:

How to correctly (re)install SilverFast software for NikonM devices.
NikonM devices are: LS30/40, LS2000/4000 and LS8000.

A:

conditions
1. prior to install SilverFast please completely delete older versions of SilverFast(NikonM).

2. Please DO NOT INSTALL NikonScan 3.0 or 3.1 subsequently on your computer as NikonScan software will possibly overwrite files that are commonly used and might replace necessary files with older versions of the same files!
No such problem as long as NikonScan was installed before SilverFast software.

3. If using SilverFast with Nikon LS 30/2000 the Chip-release (Firmware release) of that scanner must be ver. 1.31. Please refer to http://www.nikontechusa.com

Q:

Using Nikon LS-2000, LS-30 with SilverFast 5.5 on Windows as TWAIN module, every other launch SilverFast can't find the scanner!

A:

This is due to a problem with the Nikon Maid modules staying open (busy) after SilverFast sessions has ended. Workaround: close host application and reopen host, then SilverFast.
better than this, you update SilverFast.

Q:

On Macintosh with Polaroid SS4000 resp. SS120 device connected through SCSI.
On launching SilverFast the program might issue error messages such as:
テ「テモテモ彡ould not complete import command, because an error occured"
or
テ「テモテモ could not complete import command, because of a problem with the code fragment manager"
What can be the cause?y/font>

A:

These messages are due to the FireWire and USB extensions that Silverast Ai 5.5.2 installs on Macintosh systems.
Please either connect your device as FireWire (or USB) or disable the following extensions in your System Extensions:
Polaroid SSFWDriver
Polaroid SSFWExpert

Q:

SilverFast as Photoshop module won't find my Polaroid scanner on a Macintosh powerbook, and the SilverFast TWAIN modul even causes a total Photoshop crash. Is this a bug?

A:

This behaviour of SilverFast is found only on Macintosh machines without USB or FireWire busses.
cause:
on launch SilverFast will scan all supported busses for known devices (FireWire, USB, and SCSI) for some reason it cannot deal with the fact that a given bus does not exist at all.

remedy:
contact LaserSoft support.

Q:

When calibrating my Umax Powerlook 3000 scanner, during first automatic prescan SilverFast reports "error at scan start, cannot find scanner". Is this a bug?

A:

Yes, this was a bug in SilverFast ver. 4.2.5
Workaround is: once the calibration process is started and SF does the first prescan, of which the progress can be seen on screen, manually abort that prescan as soon as the scan-target has been scanned
(aborting in Mac = command and full-stop key (.);
aborting in win = Ctrl. and full-stop key (.).

The bug interferes when the entire scan-bed is scanned, so by aborting the scan after the target has been read, will elude the bug.
This was fixed in SilverFast 4.2.8

Q:

My Umax scanner works perfectly with Umax scan Windows software, only SilverFast cannot find the scanner, what can I do?

A:

Microsoft systems install a default INF file for Umax devices. SilverFast will NOT work with Umax devices when the Microsoft hardware assistant installed the device using those generic Umax INF file.
Please delete this device entry from the Windows device manager, install the Umax scan software using their INF file (on CD) and ONLY then SilverFast can communicate with the Umax scanner.

Q:

Agfa / Umax on OS X and Firewire -
The manufacturer scan software works perfectly on OSX, but SilverFast cannot find the scanner, what can I do?

A:

Agfa F40 and Umax Powerlook 1120/1100 will not work with SilverFast on OS X when the manufacturer scan software is installed. Manufacturer scan software will block the kernel and prevents SilverFast from communicating with device.

You have to delete some extensions to work with SilverFast:
location of the extension: /system/library/extensions
the extension filename is UmaxFireWire .kext These datafile is protected. Please use the terinal windows to open it.

Type:
sudo rm -rf than dragテモテモエnテモテモエdrop these Umax datafile into the terminal window . After this press After a reboot the scanner works fine.

Q:

ScanWizard 5.76 on Windows (98,Me,2000) running o.k. but SilverFast either doesn't find my Microtek scanner at all or may freeze at some point.

A:

Cause:
The ScanWizard installation will also install a little button manager tool that will be loaded on each system start-up. This tool appears as a little icon in the program bar below - left of the system clock.
If you righ-click that icon (looks like a prohibited sign) a menu will offer three choices:
Find Scanner
Activate Scanner Button(s)
Exit

The Activat Scanner Button(s) is active by default - and this is causing problems!!!

Solution: left-click once on that Activat Scanner Button(s) and it will be unchecked. Now SF should work o.k.

Q:

SilverFast does not open, but instead it gives error: "there was no scanner found"
What can I do (latest SilverFast update and ScanWizard has no problem)?

A:

In such cases unplug the Fire Wire (or USB) cable then re-connect it.
Then click on the "Scanner Finder" - a little tool that is installed by Microtek's ScanWizard software - and select Find Scanner.... A dialog opens where you click the next button and now the window displays all found Microtek scanners.
If the scanner was found you can quit this dialog and launch SilverFast. Only if this tool did find the scanner, SilverFast will also find it.
