Film scanners of the Nikon CoolScan brand belong to the most popular and quality devices for scanning negatives and slides.

Nikon has cancelled the support for its own scanner software, versions for the actual operating systems aren't existing. SilverFast is an alternative and an enhancement, that introduces a lot of new and valuable features for Nikon scanners.

« We recommend a more powerful scan software such as "SilverFast", as the included "Nikon Scan 4.0" is out of the scanner's depth. "SilverFast" also offers the possibility to calibrate the scanner. The tools for automatic corrections are working properly and contribute to better imaging results. […] Grain can be effectively reduced by multiple scanning. The autofocus accomplishes a perfect job for accurately mounted slides and smooth film strips. »

The new SilverFast 64bit HDRi RAW data format contains any recognizable image information - including the infrared channel's data for later image optimization.

Apart from supporting the 35mm scanners Coolscan IV and V ED, Super Coolscan 2000, 4000 ED and 5000 ED, now also the medium format scanners LS-8000 and LS-9000 are fully supported under Mac OS X 10.5 - IntelMacs included - with SilverFast 6.6.

Scratch and dust removal are achieved by using SilverFast´s iSRD® function, using the scanner´s infrared channel for detection and correction of defects without any kind of ´image´ smoothing - the scans are sharper and more details of the film-grain are retained.

Even Kodachrome slides may now be scanned applying iSRD® to professionally remove dust and scratches. By means of the patented SilverFast Multi-Exposure® feature the dynamic range of scans can be greatly increased. Since SilverFast Multi-Exposure® is able to obtain a density of 4.2D, the full dynamic range of Kodachromes (up to 3.8D) can be captured - without SilverFast Multi-Exposure®, the LS-5000 generally reaches a dynamic range of only about 3.3D.

SilverFast Multi-Exposure® increases the number of visible shades of gray from 3,388 to an incredible 17,378, based on the ISO Norm 21550 standard.

Nikon Filmscanner is now addressed directly without any detour through the MAID-module.

Nikon officially announced some time ago that NikonScan will not be supported any more for Mac OS. Official announcement
