2.3.19 Dust and Scratch Removal (SRD)

If larger defects such as scratches or dust mar the picture, they should be removed after sharpening and before the final scan. SilverFast offers the SRD tool (Smart Removal of Defects) for this purpose. It is important to adjust the desired resolution, the zoom factor, and the dimensions of the picture before calling SRD.

The effect of SRD can be monitored in the 1:1 preview on the monitor. Click the "1:1" button to open the navigator window, in which a yellow frame marks the current image section. This frame can be moved with the mouse to check the effect of SRD on all the sections of the image. In the 1:1 preview, the Display menu can be used to adjust whether the original image or the repaired image should be shown. The Mark setting is very useful for adjusting the sliders. SilverFast 8 displays the detected defects to allow the user to set the slider so that just the required amount of correction can be applied. After clicking while holding Cmd and Shift down, the infrared image can be examined in case the scanner has infrared capabilities.

Scratches located in a homogeneous area such as in the example picture may be irritating, but they are very easy to remove with SilverFast 8. By using a mask, you can ensure that SRD is only used in the area affected, and that other parts of the image will not accidentally be damaged by SRD. That could happen, for example, if the tool has to be set to a very high setting to repair particularly severe defects. The three scratches in the example are just such a difficult case. After clicking the button with the quill tip on the SRD toolbar, you can start calibrating a mask in the image. In SilverFast Ai Studio 8, this button is displayed once the expert settings are opened. By default, this tool is used to draw a path mask. A longer click on the button opens a menu in which you can switch to a polygonal mask. There are also different tools here that can be used to edit or extend an already existing mask after it has been created.

A polygonal mask is drawn in exactly the same way as drawing in a vector drawing program: one click sets a corner point, while clicking and dragging generates a Bezier curve. This allows masks to be created with great precision in any possible shape. If there are multiple defective areas in the image, each area can be masked. First, the corner points of the first mask are drawn onto the image. After setting the first corner point, you have to name the mask. It will then be available in the drop-down menu. The mask is complete when another click on the first point closes the polygon. The cursor indicates this by turning into a closed circle.

If another shape is to be drawn, then select Add from the menu. The settings on the sliders in the SRD tool palette will then apply to all polygons in the same way. In areas that are drawn using the quill tip setting Subtract, SRD will no longer be applied. This can be used to remove parts of existing polygons, as well as entire polygons. To do this, just draw a larger polygon around the existing one. For all mask polygons on a level, the same settings for detection, defect size, and extension will be used. In SilverFast 8 Ai Studio, you can create up to four levels, each of which can have their own settings. This allows areas with mild defects to be repaired with more moderate settings. Severe scratches in the same image can also be treated with stronger SRD settings.
