Q:

IT8 reference file missing
Where can I find the appropriate reference file for my IT8-Target? There is a specific file with reference data for each IT8-Target. Other reference data cannot be used, since it will lead to incorrect data.

A:

Usually this file should be copied into the "IT8-Reference" folder (in the SilverFast folder) during the installation of SilverFast.

Should you own a different IT8-Target, i.e. from a new production series, or if you have received it afterwards, it is possible that the appropriate file is missing from your installation CD. You can find the file on our Web-site at
http://www.silverfast.com/english/download/index.html
and download it for free. This link will provide you with the files for all available IT8-Targets.

Which one is the correct file?
the charge number of a given target is also the file name of the corresponding reference file. Depending on the kind of calibration target, the reference file name includes eihter the letter "R" = reflective - for reflective targets or the letter "T" = transparent - for transparency targets.
You'll find the charge number of a target here:
reflective targets = printed buttom right corner of target transparency 4x5 = sticker on protection envelope of target transparency 35mm = printed on slide frame

(For example: the reference file "R000925.txt" refers to the reflective-target "LaserSoft", dated Sept. 25, 2000).

Please copy the correct file into the folder marked "IT8 Reference" in the SilverFast folder. Now you can properly start the IT8 calibration of SilverFast.

Q:

CMS no 'calibration' option
Using SilverFast ver. 6.0.2r31 (or higher) I cannot select the CMS option 'calibration' as described in my manual. However, my calibration closed with a SUCCESS message. What is wrong here?

A:

LaserSoft Imaging changed the IT8 calibration function in that respect. Since SilverFast Ai version 6.0.2r31 the CMS option 'Calibration' is no longer available!

The calibration profile will ONLY be saved in the system's color management folder and the CMS box "Scanner - Internal" only has two possible states:
'none' = calibration profile inactive
and 'ColorSync' ('ICM' in Windows) = calibration profile active.

Q:

IT8 calibration profile
where does SilverFast save the generated IT8 calibration input profile?

A:

Macintosh
System folder > ColorSync folder

Windows 2000, XP
c: > Windows or WinNT > system32 > Color
or
c: > Windows or WinNT > spool > drivers > color
Windows 98

Q:

message: RGB profile missing
What does it mean when SilverFast's IT8 tool tells me:
"Your internal RGB profile is missing. Thus, input matching cannot be activated automatically after calibration. Continue anyway?"

A:

This message reminds you that the CMS setting for:
"Internal - Monitor" is set to "None"
and no internal working color space is defined.

Please set this box to either 'ColorSync' ('ICM' in Windows) or 'Automatic' and then select a corresponding profile in the selection box: 'Internal'.

Q:

IT8 error message
Error message during calibration process: "greyscale sampling unexeptable, please correct frame position..." or similar text. However, your scan frame is positioned correctly.

A:

possible cause:
the selected IT8 reference file does not match the calibration target in use.

remedy:
check whether you selected the correct calibartion reference file.

Q:

How do I calibrate negatives?
How do I select film profiles in positive mode?

A:

The orange mask of the emulsion surface of negatives makes it rather impossible to use a standard calibration process for negative images. To assure fine details, the contrast would necessarily be enforced to strongly.
To remedy this, LaserSoft Imaging has developed the Negafix tool which comes integrated into SilverFast.
You simply select your film material and go ahead producing optimal results.

With positive film material it is just the other way round:
You don't need to use a specific film material profile, because the IT8 calibration standard allows to let the software know how a scanner sees colours.
The main idea about calibration is linearisation. However, you do not calibrate a given film, but a given source of light.
If the qualities of the scanner's lamp change (due to age, warmth, more than one lamp in the scanner), you'll need to recalibrate.
Although different films will show different colours for the same image, this isn't important to calibration, because what calibration is about that you get the colours on the film into your image file - regardless of the circumstances of the digitisation process, you shall ideally get the same colour data.

Q:

OSX 10.1.4 did not list SilverFast CD
When I calibrate my SCSI scanner with SilverFast on Macintosh OSX I cannot direct the IT8 calibration to the corresponding reference file, which is on the SilverFast CD. The CD is not listed for selection. What can I do?

A:

Please return to the OSX finder and open the SilverFast CD.
copy the corresponding IT8 reference file (Word file) to the Finder Desktop.
Return to SilverFast and direct the IT8 calibration to the Word file on the Finder Desktop.
