Q:

Where can I find a list showing all the supported NegaFix film profiles?

A:

This list can be viewed here:
http://www.silverfast.com/show/negafixprofiles/en.html

Q:

Nikon NegaFix
Using Nikon film scanner my negative prescan with NegaFix appears too dark. What is wrong here?

A:

This effect may occur with some negatives and is due to the default values of the NegaFix Auto tolerance (NegaFix > Expert dialog).
Workaround: increase the auto tolerance in the NegaFix dialog.

Q:

Neg.:direct
I found a new option in the SilverFast general panel under "Pos./Neg." selection. What does this "Neg.:direct" option do?

A:

a new scan mode in SilverFast(NikonM) Ai and SE software - SF ver. 5.5.2r15(Mac)/r20(Win).
applies to: LS30/40/2000/4000/8000

Why did LaserSoft-Imaging add this new negative mode to SilverFast for Nikon film scanners ?
This mode should basically help all those users facing problems in the achievement of good quality scans from their negatives.

The common reasons for such problems are:
- film type is not supported by NegaFix.
- film type is supported but quality is not satisfying.

NegaFix quality may suffer, due to the indirect communication with the Nikon hardware. Therefore, LaserSoft-Imaging added this negative "direct" mode (Neg.:direct) for those cases where quality just don't meet the usual expectations.
In this mode SilverFast will NOT apply it's NegaFix data corrections and will instead rely on the Nikon Maid libraries for better negative analysis.

Limitations:
it is NOT possible to switch mode when working with images from a job queue in the SilverFast JobManager. You cannot change to positive or to the other negative mode. This means for negative Job-scanning that the desired negative mode (NegaFix or Neg.:direct) must be chosen BEFORE you start the SilverFast JobManager.

SilverFast default setting for negativ scans is: NegaFix.

Q:

NEGAFIX Profile Import?
I have a Nikon LS-20 and SilverFast 3.8. Are there any film profiles for SilverFast?

A:

The good news is that we do have film profiles in our software. The bad news is that you cannot import or export film profiles to or from our software, as they are an integrated part of SilverFast. In the not too distant future we will make it possible to allow importing or exporting film profiles.

SilverFast Ai 5.5.0r19(Mac)/r18(Win) has no NegaFix dialog in combination with this device, because this device does not deliver sufficient information to the software. As SilverFastâ€Â™s NegafFix calculation is based on high-bit information (raw data). Unfortunately the LS20 does not meet the requirements for SilverFast's NegaFix calculations. Therefore this SilverFast function is not applicable in comination with the CoolScan LS20 and SilverFast 5.5.

Q:

Why there is no NegaFix dialog for my Nikon scanner?

A:

The SilverFast negative dialog window mentioned in the SilverFast documentation is not available for the Nikon models LS2000 and LS30. The logic of that hardware detects the material layers internally. SilverFast's negative dialog presets would conflict with the scanner's internal analysis. Therefore, this dialog is not available in SilverFast for those Nikons.

Q:

Any NegaFix film profiles missing?

A:

LaserSoft Imaging tries to support most / all of the negative films which are currently available. What's about not supported negative films, e.g. old films, special professional films, etc.?

We can try to produce NegaFix film profiles also for these films, if:

  1. we get some 48 bit raw data files (without any corrections!!) from normally exposed and (ideally) underexposed and overexposed negatives (all from the same image / location / setting),
  2. these negatives show black and white and some grayscales and (ideally) more or less all colours and skintones

Please be so kind and scan the negatives in SilverFastAi with "Image mode /48 bit HDR colour" as small files of about 5 MB and compress them in SilverFastAi as JPEGs (SilverFastAi / General panel / Scan Mode / Normal (File) / Format: JPEG / Options: Quality at level 8. The resulting size will be about 500 kB.
Afterwards our developer team will try to reconstruct an original negative profile for this film.
